From Philly to Essaouira to NYC to the World, Ben Arsenal, Moktar Gania and Akil Apollo created “Heavy Like a Ton” which is a dance-floor workout for the times.
Philly goes to Morocco:
Ben Arsenal is a Philadelphia based innovator in the dance music space. As a producer, DJ, instructor, arranger, and band leader he leads Philadelphias notorious Worldtown- an international club concept turned seven piece live house music band.
Morocco:
Former port of Timbuktu in the 18th and 19th centuries, Essaouira, which has a deep transcultural background along its many music and art festivals, appears today as the playground of the boldest musical experiences - Essaouira preserving the last and lonely sacred house of every Gnawa communities (Zaouïa) in Morocco. As a worthy heir to the Gania dynasty which counted so much in the culture of Morocco, Maâlem Moktar Gania from Essaouira has self established himself as an essential player in the today Gnawa music scene. Nurtured by these pillars of the Gnawa tradition, namely both late father Boubker and brother Mahmoud, the young Moktar has performed all over the world with the Gania family but also with such figures as Randy Weston, Bill Laswell, Pharoah Sanders, Carlos Santana and many others.
Morocco & Philly go to NYC:
Akil Apollo began writing poetry in elementary school and mastered freestyle/improvised rapping in early high school. In college he spent years rapping with his former best friend, Childish Gambino, in the parks and dorms of New York and as Alternative rock/Rap Band IPPAZZI where the two sharped their skills as lyricists together. As an MC/Emcee and Event Producer his residencies and collaborations have included The Get Down, House of Yes, DayBreaker, Ecstatic Dance and a lyrical channel for many sacred ceremonies. He is currently completing his double-solo music project with his band and alter-ego “Diamond Adronika DeLaFunk”. Akil’s rapping, writing, and co-producing spans many genres and collaborators but Ben Arsenal of Worldtown truly is one of his favorites of all time! Heavy Like a Ton!
